[대한경제=김태형 기자] 2026년 여름은 오래 기억될 것 같다. ‘폭염’과 ‘폭락’이라는, 뜨겁고도 차가웠던 잔인한 계절로. 극한 폭염으로 밖은 위험하다지만, 휴대폰 주식창은 비명조차 지를 수 없을 만큼 더 위험하다. 서킷브레이커와 사이드카가 번갈아 발동하는 장세는 ‘개미’들의 심장을 옥죄고 있다.

아이러니하게도 폭락의 한복판에는 대한민국 거인들의 역대급 실적이 있다. 삼성전자는 2분기 영업이익 89조5000억원을 기록하며 3분기 연속 최대 실적을 경신했다. 1년새 전체 영업이익이 19배 늘었다. SK하이닉스 역시 분기 영업이익 60조원이라는 가공할 수치를 써냈다. 두 거인이 찍어낸 눈부신 수치에도 시장은 지독하리만치 냉담했다. 사상 최고 실적이라는 훈장이 무색하게 주가는 반토막 수준으로 내려앉았다.

한국 증시의 패닉셀(공포 매도) 이면에는 끊임없이 피어오르는 ‘AI 피크론(수요 둔화)’과 불안정한 펀더멘털이 자리한다. 글로벌 빅테크의 AI 투자에 대한 의구심이 번질 때마다, 유독 한국 시장은 지정학적ㆍ산업적 약점을 노출하며 가장 먼저, 가장 크게 휘청인다.

이재명 대통령은 ‘대체 불가능한 대한민국’을 국정 목표로 선언했다. 매혹적인 구호다. 젠슨 황(엔비디아), 샘 올트먼(오픈AI) 등 글로벌 AI 빅테크 수장들이 ‘샌프란시스코 AI 서밋’에 총집결한 장면은 상징적이다. 그러나 서밋 밖의 현실은 선언에 턱없이 못 미친다. 미ㆍ중 패권 전쟁이라는 거대한 태풍 속에서, K-반도체나 K-컬처는 글로벌 빅테크라는 ‘상수’에 붙어 있는 불안정한 ‘변수’일 뿐일지도 모른다. 이는 우리가 아직 대체 불가능한 독자적 생태계를 구축하지 못했음을 역설적으로 증명한다.

이러한 극한 변동성의 시대에 생존 키워드가 ‘메타인지(Metacognition)’다. 메타인지는 스스로의 위치와 한계를 객관적으로 감조(監照)하는 지능의 거울이다. 사교육 1번가 대치동의 핫아이템이기도 하다.

힌트는 승부와 위기 대응의 현장에 있다. 세계 랭킹 1위 신진서 9단이 현존 최강의 바둑 AI 카타고(KataGo)를 무릎 꿇린 비결은 무모한 전투욕을 누르고 판 전체와 자신의 한계를 차분히 읽어낸 메타인지에 있었다.

재난 현장에서 보여준 일본의 대응 역시 지독할 정도의 메타인지를 증명한다. 최근 구마모토현에서 발생한 규모 7.1의 강진 속에서도 일본은 ‘대참사’를 피했다. 2016년 대지진의 비극을 교훈 삼아 10년간 내진율을 89.5%까지 끌어올리고, 촘촘한 대비 시스템을 다져온 결과다. 한계를 숨기지 않고 완벽히 객관화하는 것, 그것이 죽음의 공포 속에서도 생존을 담보하는 힘이다.

시시각각 들이닥치는 폭염과 폭락의 경고음 속에서 필요한 것은 현상에 매몰된 착각이 아닌 뼈를 깎는 자각이다. 우리의 기술이 글로벌 공급망 어디쯤에 매달려 있는지, 외풍에 쉽게 흔들리는 ‘대체 가능한 부품’에 머물러 있지는 않은지 물어야 한다.

10년 전 이세돌이, 그리고 오늘의 신진서가 AI라는 거대한 벽 앞에서 자신의 한계를 서늘하게 자각한 뒤 판 전체를 흔드는 승부수를 던졌듯, 대한민국 경제 역시 껍데기를 깨부수는 메타인지적 결단이 필요하다. 스스로를 냉정하게 객관화하지 않는다면, 2026년 이 뜨겁고 차가운 여름의 경고는 머지않아 더 가혹한 현실로 돌아올 것이다. / kth@

The summer of 2026 will likely linger in our memory for a very long time—a cruel season defined by two stark extremes: scorching heatwaves and shivering market crashes. While the blistering heat makes stepping outside dangerous, the stock market trading screens inside our smartphones are infinitely more perilous, leaving investors gasping in silent panic. As circuit breakers and sidecars trigger in rapid succession, the relentless volatility is clutching retail investors by the throat.

Ironically, standing at the very epicenter of this financial rout are the record-breaking performances of South Korea’s corporate giants. Samsung Electronics shattered its quarterly records for the third consecutive term, posting a Q2 operating profit of 89.5 trillion won—a staggering nineteen-fold increase year-over-year. SK Hynix similarly delivered a formidable quarterly operating profit of 60 trillion won. Yet, despite these breathtaking numbers, the market’s response remained brutally cold. The badge of honor from all-time high earnings proved useless as stock prices halved in a wave of panic selling.

Beneath the surface of this aggressive sell-off lies the persistent ghost of the "AI Peak Theory"—fears of slowing demand—compounded by fragile economic fundamentals. Whenever doubts creep in regarding Big Tech’s massive AI capital expenditures, the South Korean market, with its geopolitical and structural vulnerabilities exposed, is invariably the first to stumble and the hardest hit.

President Lee Jae-myung declared "Irreplaceable Korea" as a prime national objective—a captivating rally cry. The symbolic gathering of global AI titans, including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, at the "San Francisco AI Summit" seemed to echo this ambition. Yet, reality outside the summit falls painfully short. Amid the fierce geopolitical typhoon between the U.S. and China, Korea’s semiconductor prowess and cultural exports may ultimately be nothing more than unstable variables anchored to the constants of global Big Tech. Paradoxically, this proves we have yet to build an irreplaceable, self-sustaining ecosystem of our own.

In an era of such extreme volatility, the ultimate survival keyword is metacognition—the cognitive mirror through which one objectively observes one's own position and limitations. It is no coincidence that this concept has also become the hottest educational strategy in Daechi-dong, Korea's premier learning hub.

Clues to navigating this dynamic can be found on the battlegrounds of competition and crisis response. When Shin Jin-seo 9-dan, the world's top Go player, brought KataGo—the world's most formidable Go AI—to its knees, his secret lay in metacognition: suppressing reckless combat instincts to calmly read both the broader board and his own limits.

Japan’s recent crisis response offers another masterclass in relentless metacognition. Facing a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan averted a major catastrophe. This was the result of a decade-long effort born from the tragic 2016 quake, during which the nation meticulously fortified its infrastructure, driving earthquake resistance rates up to 89.5%. Confronting one's vulnerabilities without denial and translating them into systemic readiness—that is the force that guarantees survival even in the face of mortal panic.

Amid the deafening alarms of heatwaves and market crashes, what we urgently need is not a comforting illusion buried in short-term metrics, but a bone-deep self-awareness. We must coldly ask ourselves: Where does our technology truly hang along the global supply chain? Are we still merely an "replaceable component," easily shaken by external gusts?

A decade ago, Lee Sedol—and today, Shin Jin-seo—chose to gaze into the icy mirror of their own limitations before casting decisive, game-changing moves against the towering wall of AI. South Korea’s economy now demands an equally bold, metacognitive breakthrough. Unless we objectively evaluate our true standing, the warnings forged in the hot and cold crucible of the summer of 2026 will soon return as a far more merciless reality.
